Hamas seeks comprehensive deal for Gaza war resolution
Hamas has expressed its readiness to end the Gaza conflict through a comprehensive agreement that would include the exchange of all Israeli hostages for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel. Khalil Al-Hayya, the leader of Hamas's Gaza operations, emphasized that the group no longer supports interim deals and rejects Israel's offer of a temporary truce. Instead, Hamas is open to immediate negotiations for a broad settlement that would end the war, release Palestinian prisoners, and support the reconstruction of Gaza. Al-Hayya criticized Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, accusing him of using partial agreements to further his political goals, which Hamas sees as perpetuating the war.
Egyptian mediators have struggled to revive a ceasefire agreement originally brokered in January, with no notable progress. Israel proposed a 45-day truce to allow for hostage exchanges and potential peace talks, but Hamas rejected the condition of disarming. Despite partial releases of hostages under earlier ceasefire terms, the violence has resumed, with Israel's military continuing its offensive, demanding the demilitarization of Gaza and the release of remaining hostages.
Hamas also reported the loss of contact with militants holding an Israeli-American hostage, Edan Alexander, after Israeli airstrikes targeted their hideout. The war, ignited by Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack, has led to significant casualties, with over 51,000 Palestinians reported dead in the ongoing Israeli offensive.
