Handala mission: Freedom Flotilla launches new humanitarian voyage to Gaza
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has announced the launch of its latest mission to Gaza, named Handala, set to depart on July 13. This civilian-led humanitarian initiative aims to deliver life-saving aid and demonstrate global solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
“The vessel will carry life-saving humanitarian aid and a message of solidarity from people around the world refusing to stay silent as Gaza is starved, bombed, and buried under rubble,” the coalition declared in a statement. The mission represents a renewed effort to break the blockade on Gaza and alleviate the suffering of its besieged population.
A mission following intercepted efforts
The Handala mission follows the controversial interception of the Madleen on June 9 by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF). The UK-flagged vessel carrying humanitarian cargo and 12 unarmed volunteers, including European Parliament members, journalists, doctors, and activists, was seized in international waters. The interception, which rights organizations condemned as a violation of international law, resulted in the detention of its crew under harsh conditions.
Notable figures on the Madleen included climate activist Greta Thunberg, MEP Rima Hassan, journalist Omar Faiad, and peace activist Antonio Toribio. While some were deported by June 12, others endured solitary confinement, mistreatment, and lengthy detention before legal proceedings began. Amnesty International and Adalah have strongly criticized Israel's actions, labeling them a breach of humanitarian law.
Renewed resolve despite suppression
Undeterred by the Madleen's interception, the Handala mission vows to carry forward its predecessor's mission. Onboard will be medics, journalists, lawyers, and social justice activists, though the coalition has yet to release a full list of participants. The coalition reiterated its commitment to taking action where institutions and governments have failed, emphasizing the civilian nature of their efforts.
This mission comes amid escalating violence in Gaza, where Israeli forces continue to target civilians in schools, hospitals, and aid distribution centers. Despite these challenges, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition remains steadfast, insisting that acts of force will not deter their pursuit of justice and relief for Gaza’s people.
