Heavy Thunderstorms to Impact Moroccan Provinces with Intense Rainfall
Morocco braces for a day of intense weather, as a new alert forecasts heavy thunderstorms across several provinces, including the Oriental region. According to the alert, between 15 to 30 millimeters of rain is expected in areas such as Boulemane, Oujda Angad, Guercif, and Taourirt. The storm, accompanied by strong winds, is set to hit these areas from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. local time.
Additionally, the weather will similarly affect Ifrane, Sefrou, Taza, and Fez, regions known for their distinct climates and often unpredictable seasonal shifts.
This severe weather follows several weeks of dramatic fluctuations in Morocco’s climate, ranging from chilly to exceptionally hot across multiple regions. In the past two weeks, heavy rainfall in some areas led to dangerous floods, notably impacting Marrakech, where streets turned into rivers and vehicles became stranded. Videos and images circulating on social media captured these alarming scenes, with hashtags like #InfrastructureMarrakech highlighting public frustration over the city’s infrastructure struggles in handling such extreme weather.
Many Moroccans have voiced concerns, particularly due to Marrakech's status as an international tourist hub, arguing that the city’s infrastructure is inadequate for managing severe weather events.
