Hyundai Rotem secures landmark $1.5 billion deal to supply double-decker trains in Morocco
Hyundai Rotem has signed a historic $1.5 billion (2.2 trillion won) contract with Morocco’s National Railways Office (ONCF) to supply double-decker trains, marking the largest order ever secured by the South Korean company. The agreement, announced on Wednesday, underscores a significant step in modernizing Morocco’s rail network as the country prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
The new trains, capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h, will connect Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city, to several key regions across the country. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance public transportation infrastructure ahead of the global sporting event. Hyundai Rotem emphasized that its proposal, which includes technology transfer and training programs, was well-received by the Moroccan government. Notably, a portion of the train production will take place locally, boosting Morocco’s domestic rail industry.
In addition to manufacturing, Hyundai Rotem and the Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) will handle maintenance and repair services through separate negotiations with Moroccan authorities. This comprehensive approach highlights the strategic partnership between South Korea and Morocco, leveraging public-private collaboration to deliver cutting-edge rail solutions.
This contract marks Hyundai Rotem’s first venture in Morocco, a milestone the company attributes to the successful “One Team Korea” strategy. This approach unites public and private sectors to showcase South Korea’s rail expertise on the global stage. The South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, along with Korail, played pivotal roles in securing the deal, outcompeting European rivals. Last year, South Korea’s Transport Minister, Park Sang-woo, visited Morocco to promote the competitiveness of the Korean rail industry.
“This order was won through a unified ‘One Team Korea’ effort, demonstrating the strength of South Korea’s rail sector on an international scale,” a Hyundai Rotem representative stated. The deal not only strengthens bilateral ties but also positions South Korea as a key player in global rail infrastructure development.
