In Tunis, Jouahri advocates for strengthening arab monetary cooperation
At a meeting in Tunis on September 17, 2025, Abdellatif Jouahri, Governor of Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), highlighted the importance of enhanced cooperation between Arab central banks to confront the global political, economic, and commercial shocks currently affecting the world. Speaking on the sidelines of the 49th regular session of the Council of Governors of Arab Central Banks and Monetary Authorities, Jouahri emphasized that these shocks represent a significant challenge for each country, with every central bank striving to respond to the crisis using its own resources.
The session focused on global disruptions, but also on combating terrorism financing and money laundering. Jouahri noted that the goal of these discussions is to assist countries on the "gray list" of financial action, using the experiences of countries like Morocco, which has successfully removed itself from this list.
He also pointed to disparities in monetary policies among Arab countries, particularly between oil-producing and non-oil-producing nations. Jouahri stated that Morocco's monetary policy is "exemplary," particularly in terms of coordination and cooperation with other Arab central banks. Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has embraced both bilateral cooperation—such as through deposits—and increased technical cooperation in key areas like digital finance and climate change.
The Governor stressed that this technical cooperation, particularly in monetary policy, is critical in an era of global uncertainties that deeply affect central bank operations.
The 49th session, which is being chaired by Sudan, is organized by the Arab Monetary Fund and the Central Bank of Tunisia. The two-day event brings together central bank governors and monetary institutions from across the Arab world to discuss strategies and share expertise in tackling contemporary financial challenges.
