Indian frigate INS Tamal trains with Moroccan Navy in Casablanca
The Indian stealth frigate INS Tamal made a port call in Casablanca from August 6 to 9, 2025, where it carried out a series of joint naval exercises with the Moroccan Royal Navy, including a PASSEX drill alongside the Moroccan frigate Mohammed VI.
According to the Indian Ministry of Defence, the visit marked a key step in strengthening bilateral maritime cooperation between New Delhi and Rabat. The stopover, part of the INS Tamal’s return voyage from Russia to India after its recent commissioning, was accompanied by cultural, sporting, and diplomatic activities aimed at deepening ties between the two countries.
The visit included official meetings with senior Moroccan naval commanders, attended by India’s ambassador to Morocco, Sanjay Rana, who praised the growing trust and partnership between the armed forces of both nations. Crew members from both navies also took part in cross-ship visits, bilateral meetings, yoga sessions, and cultural exchanges.
This is the third visit by an Indian frigate to Casablanca in less than two years, underlining the growing importance of Indo-Moroccan defense relations, which now extend beyond naval cooperation to cover broader strategic and defense investments.
The highlight of the mission was the joint naval passage exercise, designed to improve operational coordination and combat readiness. Analysts note that Morocco is diversifying its military partnerships, traditionally centered on Europe and the United States, by engaging with emerging Asian powers like India, which seeks to expand its presence in the western Mediterranean and Atlantic.
