Iran Reports 71 Dead in Israeli Strike on Evin Prison
On June 23, an Israeli airstrike targeted Evin Prison, located in Tehran, Iran, resulting in the deaths of 71 people, according to Asghar Jahangir, spokesperson for the Iranian judiciary. This attack marked a shift in Israeli tactics, broadening their focus from strictly military and nuclear facilities to include symbolic sites associated with Iran’s political regime.
Jahangir reported that among the victims were prison staff, conscripted youth, detainees, visiting family members, and local residents living near the prison. Earlier statements confirmed that part of the administrative building was damaged, causing casualties and injuries. Authorities have since relocated surviving inmates to other detention centers within Tehran province.
Evin Prison is known to hold several foreign nationals, including two French citizens who have been detained for three years. Following the attack, France's Foreign Minister expressed concern for the safety of Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris, condemning the strike as unacceptable.
