Iran warns Israel of advanced missile retaliation amid renewed tensions
Iran has issued a stark warning to Israel, signaling its readiness to deploy a new generation of advanced missiles if hostilities resume. The announcement follows the fragile ceasefire that ended a 12-day conflict in June, which left both sides claiming victory and the international community on edge.
Tehran unveils enhanced missile capabilities
On Wednesday, Iran’s Defense Minister, Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh, revealed that the missiles used during the June conflict were outdated compared to the country’s current arsenal. Speaking to state media, Nasirzadeh stated, “The missiles used in the 12-day war were manufactured a few years ago. Today, we possess missiles with far greater capabilities, and if the Zionist enemy embarks on another adventure, we will undoubtedly use them.”
The June confrontation was ignited by an Israeli bombing campaign targeting key Iranian figures, including military commanders, nuclear scientists, and critical sites, while also striking residential areas. Iran retaliated with a barrage of missile and drone attacks, claiming to have overwhelmed Israeli defense systems. The United States briefly intervened with strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities before a cessation of hostilities was declared on June 24.
Fragile truce under strain
Despite the ceasefire, Tehran has repeatedly emphasized the instability of the truce. This week, First Vice President Mohammed Reza Aref declared that Iran must remain vigilant, stating, “We are not even in a ceasefire; we are in a cessation of hostilities.” His comments underline the precarious state of peace and Iran’s readiness for renewed confrontation.
Military exercises and international concerns
Iran’s military is set to conduct a two-day exercise starting Thursday, showcasing a range of short- and medium-range cruise missiles. These drills are likely to further heighten tensions in the region.
Western nations, particularly France, have expressed deep concern over Iran’s expanding missile program. In July, French officials called for a “comprehensive deal” addressing both Tehran’s nuclear and missile capabilities. However, Iranian authorities insist that their defense strategies are non-negotiable, framing missile development as a sovereign right.
The announcement of Iran’s advanced missile capabilities, coupled with ongoing military preparations and diplomatic stalemates, adds a new layer of uncertainty to an already volatile Middle East.
