Lebanese cabinet meets at grand serail amid ministerial and security discussions
The Lebanese Cabinet convened on Tuesday at the Grand Serail, marking its first meeting since approving the army’s plan to disarm militias, including Hezbollah, without setting a specific timeline.
Notably, the Shiite ministers, who had previously walked out to protest the disarmament plan, were present. Before the meeting, Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine, a Shiite, stated: “The army plays an essential role. We are an integral part of it and we salute its patriotism.”
Among the agenda items, the Cabinet will review a bill to create a Ministry of Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence. Currently, these responsibilities fall under a State Minister, Kamal Shehadi, in charge of displaced persons.
The Finance Ministry is proposing a law to allocate additional funds to the Education Ministry to support the private teachers’ indemnity fund. Three draft decrees aim to recall reserve military personnel to active duty, while another decree seeks to modify customs duties.
The Agriculture Ministry plans to approve a memorandum of understanding with Oman’s Ministry of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources to develop sustainable practices in agriculture, fisheries, and food security. The Justice Ministry will present a convention with the European Union on criminal justice (EUROJUST) and seek authorization for its signature, alongside a decree to appoint the president and members of the Judicial Council.
The Health Ministry is requesting approval to transfer 2,237,500,000,000 Lebanese pounds for hospitalization expenses in public and private sectors, and 447,500,000,000 pounds for renewing public hospitals and rehabilitating staff.
Finally, the Cabinet plans to revise advisors’ fees within ministries, raising them from 6 million Lebanese pounds per month to 180 million.
