London plans ten new wild swimming locations to boost water quality
A recent report from the London Assembly recommends creating ten new wild swimming locations across the capital to improve water quality and expand public access to outdoor activities.
Currently, London has eight designated natural swimming spots, all in docks or ponds. No river locations meet the “good” water quality standard set by the Environment Agency under the EU’s water framework directive.
The report suggests the mayor, Sadiq Khan, should aim to designate four new bathing sites by 2028 and an additional six by 2034. Priority should be given to rivers already used for recreation, such as the river at Teddington in south-west London.
The committee emphasized the importance of tackling water pollution with the same focus applied to air pollution. Khan’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) initiative has already cut nitrogen dioxide and particulate emissions significantly across the city.
The report also recommends that the mayor have a position on the Thames Water board to ensure accountability in cleaning up London’s rivers. Additionally, it calls for clear, accessible guidance on water safety for all rivers and water sites by April 2026, accompanied by public campaigns and the promotion of safe, supervised swimming areas.
