Madagascar: Former President Andry Rajoelina stripped of his nationality
Madagascar’s deposed president Andry Rajoelina has been officially stripped of his Malagasy nationality, according to a government decree cited by several local media outlets.
The decision, signed by Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo and published in the official gazette, is based on a law stating that any Malagasy citizen who voluntarily acquires another nationality automatically loses their Malagasy citizenship.
Rajoelina, 51 years old, had acquired French nationality in 2014, a fact that had already caused major controversy ahead of the 2023 presidential election, which he won amid boycotts and accusations of illegitimacy.
After weeks of mass protests and a military mutiny by the elite CAPSAT unit on October 11, Rajoelina fled the country. He was formally removed from office on October 14, and Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, head of the mutinous unit, was appointed interim president with a promise to organize new elections within two years.
Rajoelina has not disclosed his current location, stating only that he is “in hiding for his own safety.”
This unprecedented move — revoking a former president’s nationality — deepens the political turmoil in Madagascar, raising questions about legality, legitimacy, and the country’s fragile democratic future.
