Mali's Security Forces Capture High-Profile ISGS Commander in Northern Operation
Mali's armed forces achieved a significant breakthrough in their counter-terrorism efforts by apprehending Mahamad Ould Erkehile, a senior commander of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), during an operation in the country's northern region on Friday. Erkehile, who operated under the aliases Abou Rakia and Abou Hach, held a prominent position within the militant organization.
Military officials identified Erkehile as a key figure behind numerous civilian attacks in the Menaka and Gao regions, as well as coordinating assaults against the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa). "Abou Hach has been a long-sought target of intelligence services due to his central role in the region's most heinous acts of violence and abuses," stated military authorities in their Saturday night announcement.
The successful operation in the Gao region resulted in the elimination of multiple ISGS fighters and the seizure of substantial military equipment, including materials used in the production of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
This development comes amid Mali's ongoing struggle with terrorism since 2012, as the country faces persistent threats from both Al-Qaeda and ISIS-affiliated groups. These organizations have intensified their campaigns against security forces and civilians, contributing to regional instability.
The operation represents a notable advancement in Mali's counter-terrorism initiatives as the nation pursues its mission to restore peace and security across the Sahel region.
