Marrakech Marathon 2025 Draws Elite Global Field with Olympic Qualifying Status

The 35th Marrakech International Marathon is set to mark a historic milestone with over 15,000 athletes, including 110 elite runners from across the globe, converging on the historic city on January 26, 2025.

Race Director Mohamed Knidiri announced at a Marrakech press conference that this year's event is poised to break participation records. The marathon, which holds the prestigious distinction of being Africa's record holder in the discipline, continues to attract world-class talent to its challenging course.

Leading the elite field is Kenyan powerhouse Kitwara Sammy Irop, who brings an impressive personal best of 2:04:28. He will face strong competition from countryman Kilimo Rhonzas Lokitam (2:06:09) and home favorite Mohamed Reda El Aaraby (2:06:55), setting the stage for an intense battle at the front.

The women's field showcases exceptional talent, headlined by Ethiopian stars Beyene Tirfi Tsegaye (2:19:41) and Bekele Abebech Afework (2:23:33). Morocco's contingent includes formidable contenders Kaoutar Farkoussi (2:25:35), Rkia El Moukim (2:26:51), Kaltoum Bouaasariya (2:27:22), and Hasna Zahi (2:28:23).

"The stakes are particularly high this year," Knidiri explained, "as performances here will serve as qualifiers for the World Championships in September." He highlighted Marrakech's favorable January climate and optimized course design as factors that could contribute to exceptional finishing times.

The event, held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, represents a collaborative effort between the Grand Atlas Association and various national and regional authorities. Since earning the World Athletics label in 2020, the marathon has served as a qualifying event for both World Championships and Olympic Games, cementing its position as the world's 11th-ranked marathon.

Beyond the main events, organizers have planned inclusive community activities, including a children's race and a 5 km "Welcome Run" on January 25, designed to help athletes adapt to local conditions. The event will also promote environmental awareness through a "Car-Free Day" focusing on environmental protection and road safety initiatives.
