Marsa Maroc Secures €65 Million to Modernize Key Port Terminals
Marsa Maroc, the Moroccan port operator, has secured €65 million in financing from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to modernize key port terminals in Morocco. This strategic partnership underscores Marsa Maroc's commitment to enhancing the country’s port infrastructure, boosting efficiency, and promoting sustainability in Morocco’s logistics sector.
The €65 million funding will be allocated for infrastructure upgrades and capacity expansion at the Casablanca and Jorf Lasfar multipurpose terminals. This includes the acquisition of advanced electric rail-mounted gantry cranes and hybrid cranes, both of which will improve cargo handling efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. By optimizing terminal operations and modernizing equipment, Marsa Maroc aims to drive sustainable growth in Morocco's maritime trade.
Marsa Maroc’s broader goal is to align with global sustainability standards, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by implementing energy-efficient systems. The company is also addressing climate challenges by designing resilient quay structures at the Jorf Lasfar terminal to withstand rising sea levels. These efforts are central to Marsa Maroc's vision of developing high-performance port facilities that meet global standards, according to the company’s Director General, Tarik El Aroussi.
“This partnership with the EBRD reflects our vision to develop sustainable, high-performance port facilities that meet global standards,” said El Aroussi. “The investment will help us expand capacity, improve service offerings, and strengthen the competitiveness of Moroccan trade,” he added.
In line with its strategy to position Moroccan ports as key regional logistics hubs, Marsa Maroc is focusing on sustainability and operational excellence. The company’s efforts align with Morocco's broader economic objectives to strengthen trade and logistics while addressing environmental concerns.
In another significant development for Morocco’s maritime sector, Morocco and Atlas Marine have signed a protocol to establish a new commercial maritime route between Agadir and Dakar. This initiative aims to enhance goods and truck transport efficiency, reduce costs, and overcome logistical challenges between Morocco and West Africa. The new route is expected to improve commercial exchanges and open up new investment opportunities for both regions.
