Moldova: Businessman Alexandru Munteanu appointed as prime minister of pro-EU government
Moldovan President Maia Sandu, a staunch supporter of closer ties with the European Union, has appointed Alexandru Munteanu, an economist and businessman, as the country’s new prime minister, following her party’s victory in last month’s parliamentary elections.
“After consultations with the parliamentary groups, I signed today the decree nominating Alexandru Munteanu as the candidate for the post of Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova,” Sandu announced on Facebook on Friday.
A pro-European majority
Sandu’s Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), a center-right formation, secured 55 out of 101 seats in the September vote — enough to form a government without coalition partners and to maintain Moldova’s pro-European course. The result was seen as decisive for the future of the small nation of 2.4 million people, located between Ukraine and Romania.
A technocrat with no political background
Aged 61, Munteanu has no prior political experience and has kept a low public profile. In 2016, he founded an investment management company operating in Belarus, Moldova, and Ukraine, where he lived for several years before relocating to Bucharest following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Munteanu’s appointment is expected to be confirmed by Parliament next week, paving the way for a new government that will continue to pursue reforms aimed at aligning Moldova more closely with the European Union.
