Moroccan activist arrested for wearing blasphemous T-shirt
Morocco’s judicial police have arrested activist Ibtissame Lachgar following the circulation of a controversial photo showing her wearing a T-shirt with the phrase "Allah is a lesbian." The image quickly sparked outrage across the country and beyond, prompting mass reports on social media and a swift official investigation.
The Public Prosecutor at the Court of First Instance in Rabat confirmed Lachgar’s arrest, stating that legal measures were being applied in line with Moroccan law. A statement from the prosecutor’s office emphasized the necessity of the investigation, noting that Lachgar has been placed under judicial custody.
Public and official reactions
The photo has ignited heated debates on social and legal platforms, with opinions divided over freedom of speech and the limits of expression regarding religion. Former Minister of Justice Mustapha Ramid commented on the controversy, arguing that while excessive monitoring of speech is undesirable, there should be no tolerance for insults or offensive remarks targeting religion.
Ramid referred to Article 267.5 of Morocco’s Penal Code, which protects the nation’s sacred values as outlined in Article 1 of the Constitution. The legal provision stipulates penalties for offending Islam, including prison terms ranging from six months to two years and financial fines.
The incident has reignited discussions about the balance between personal freedoms and the protection of religious values in Morocco, a country where such matters remain highly sensitive.
Legal context
Morocco’s laws surrounding offenses to religion are among the strictest in the region. The Penal Code specifically criminalizes actions or statements deemed disrespectful to Islam, reflecting the nation’s constitutional commitment to safeguarding its religious and cultural constants.
As the investigation into Lachgar’s case continues, the incident underscores the challenges of navigating religious sensitivities in a rapidly evolving social landscape.
