According to the minister, European Union member states issued more than 606,000 visas to Moroccan citizens in 2024, reflecting an improvement in bilateral relations and a departure from previous tensions. France alone granted nearly 284,000 visas, marking a 17% increase compared to 2023, making Morocco the top beneficiary of French visas in the region.

Bourita emphasized that Morocco’s visa decisions are guided by three principles: reciprocity, political and economic imperatives, and the context of bilateral relations. He stressed that visa policies are not based on “emotional reactions” but on a long-term strategy that balances national interests and international agreements.

The minister also highlighted Morocco’s efforts to modernize visa procedures through digitalization and advanced electronic systems, aimed at strengthening openness while safeguarding sovereignty. He noted that the government closely monitors agencies responsible for handling visa requests to avoid irregularities and prevent exploitation by illegal intermediaries. Special attention is given to urgent requests, particularly for medical treatment and education.

Bourita further recalled that the Moroccan passport has significantly improved in global rankings, now positioned among the world’s 70 most powerful passports. He attributed this progress to Morocco’s growing credibility and strengthened strategic partnerships on the international stage.

He concluded by reaffirming that visa policy must be part of an integrated national strategy, combining the protection of sovereignty and citizens’ dignity with openness and enhanced international cooperation.
