Morocco advocates for strengthened global animal health action
Morocco has made a compelling case for enhanced collective action in support of global animal health during the 92nd General Assembly of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), held from May 25 to 29 at the Maison de la Chimie in Paris.
Speaking at this significant assembly, Ahmed El Bouari, the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, reaffirmed the country's steadfast commitment to the OIE's mission. As a founding member since its inception in 1924, Morocco emphasizes its historical and strategic dedication to advancing animal health on a global scale.
El Bouari underscored the persistent threats to regional and global animal health posed by the emergence and re-emergence of various contagious animal diseases. These diseases, capable of crossing borders, can also impact public health. He stressed the importance of vigilance and the need for effective early warning systems to address new health risks, ensuring a robust mobilization to mitigate negative consequences on animal production.
Addressing the central theme of the session, "Vaccines and vaccination," the minister highlighted the critical role of vaccination in preventing and controlling animal diseases. He cited Morocco's well-structured vaccination campaigns as effective measures to contain several major animal diseases.
Furthermore, El Bouari advocated for the use of high-quality vaccines and called for enhanced international coordination to tackle challenges associated with their production and use. He also emphasized the necessity of stronger technical support from international organizations like the OIE and the FAO, particularly in cross-border health emergencies.
During the assembly, El Bouari participated in a ministerial conference that gathered representatives from member states. This high-level dialogue aims to strengthen collaboration between the OIE and governmental authorities, promoting political engagement for animal health as a crucial element of food security worldwide.
The General Assembly brought together OIE members, representatives from international and regional organizations, observer countries and territories, and key stakeholders in animal health. Its goal is to discuss advancements and global challenges related to the prevention and management of animal diseases.
This 92nd session holds particular significance as it marks the beginning of a new century of commitments, inspired by the centenary celebrations of the OIE. Several administrative and technical resolutions will be adopted to enhance animal health and welfare globally, as well as to improve the governance of the organization.
Established under the International Arrangement signed on January 25, 1924, to combat animal diseases worldwide, the OIE—formerly known as the Office International des Epizooties—serves as an intergovernmental organization dedicated to improving animal health globally. It manages the World Animal Health Information System (WAHIS) and develops health standards applicable to international trade in animals and animal products.
The organization currently includes 183 member countries and territories, with Morocco as a founding member, and maintains ongoing relationships with various international and regional organizations. Based in Paris, the OIE has regional and sub-regional offices across all continents, including Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, the Americas, and Africa.
