Morocco bans mussel harvesting in Sidi Bennour and Essaouira
The Moroccan Secretariat of State in charge of Maritime Fisheries has announced a ban on the harvesting and sale of shellfish from the classified areas of Sidi Daoud and Oum Toyour-Chouika, located in the regions of Sidi Bennour and Essaouira, until the marine environment is fully purified.
Analyses conducted by the National Institute for Fisheries Research (INRH) detected abnormal levels of marine biotoxins in mussels from these areas, posing a risk to public health, the authorities said.
Consumers are advised to purchase only packaged shellfish with official sanitary labels from authorized markets. Shellfish sold in bulk or informally do not guarantee safety and may be hazardous, the statement added.
