Morocco bans nail polishes and gels with toxic TPO ingredient
The Moroccan Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AMMPS) has announced a comprehensive ban on the manufacture, importation, distribution, marketing, and use of nail polishes and gels containing Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO). This decision follows an in-depth scientific analysis and a review of international safety standards regarding the ingredient.
Health risks linked to TPO
TPO, a widely used photo-initiator in UV-cured nail gels and polishes, has been flagged for its toxicological concerns. Scientific research has linked repeated exposure to potential harmful effects on health, raising alarms among regulators. Authorities have acted decisively to minimize risks to consumers and beauty professionals alike.
The AMMPS has instructed beauty sector professionals to halt the use of products containing TPO immediately and remove them from circulation. Consumers are urged to check product labels carefully to ensure compliance with the ban.
Part of a global shift in cosmetic safety
This prohibition is part of Morocco’s broader strategy to enhance public health protections by targeting hazardous chemical substances in cosmetic products. The move aligns with similar legislative actions in the European Union, which has also banned TPO in cosmetic applications. The decision highlights a growing global trend toward stricter cosmetic safety regulations aimed at safeguarding users from harmful chemicals.
