Morocco Cracks Down on Water Theft as Reservoirs Run Dry

Morocco's vital water resources have reached critically low levels in recent years due to persistent drought. Abdelaziz Zerouali, Director of Water Planning and Management at the Ministry of Equipment and Water, has highlighted a concerning decline in the country's reservoir levels.

Responding to this pressing issue, Moroccan authorities are intensifying efforts to combat illegal exploitation of the nation's diminishing water reserves. Zerouali disclosed that in 2023 alone, the Water Police referred over 4,000 cases to the courts for various violations, including trespassing on state water lands, constructing in waterways, and unauthorized well drilling.

To bolster enforcement, the Ministry has equipped the Water Police with state-of-the-art tools to enhance their monitoring capabilities. Patrols are vigilant for any activities aggravating Morocco's water scarcity issues, with strict collaborations established with local water authorities and prosecutors to ensure legal repercussions for offenders under the Water Act.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, a recent agreement with the Public Prosecution Office prioritizes Water Police reports, underscoring the urgency of conserving every drop during this crisis.

While enforcement actions intensify, proactive measures are also being implemented. Desalination plants are being developed to supplement drinking water sources from inland dams. Treated wastewater will be utilized for landscaping purposes, reducing the strain on fresh water supplies. Additionally, efforts are underway to optimize efficiency through the expansion of pipeline networks and the establishment of new wells to extract maximum value from depleting reserves.

With Morocco's reservoirs nearing depletion, authorities are sparing no effort in the high-stakes battle to safeguard the nation's most valuable resource - water. Through a combination of stringent enforcement measures and innovative projects, Morocco aims to ensure water security amid this severe drought.
