Morocco prepares for AFCON 2025 with extensive infrastructure projects
Morocco is actively working to complete over 120 construction and renovation projects across six cities in anticipation of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Scheduled to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, this prestigious tournament will feature 24 of Africa's top national teams.
A strategic meeting convened at Morocco’s Ministry of Interior confirmed that preparations are on track. Chaired by Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit and Budget Minister and Royal Moroccan Football Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa, the meeting brought together key stakeholders, including regional governors, city mayors, and heads of national institutions such as the National Railways Office (ONCF), National Airports Office (ONDA), and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT).
Officials reviewed the progress of stadium construction and rehabilitation in Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Fez, Marrakech, and Agadir, with all projects reportedly scheduled for timely completion. Authorities have committed to finalizing all works before December, eight months prior to the tournament’s kickoff.
In addition to sporting venues, the host cities have initiated urban development projects aimed at enhancing mobility and infrastructure surrounding the stadiums. These initiatives encompass road renovations, access improvements, signage, public lighting, pedestrian zones, and the creation of green spaces, all designed to ensure optimal conditions for hosting delegations and fans.
Regional airports are also undergoing modernization to handle the anticipated influx of passengers, while the ONCF is enhancing rail connectivity between host cities to facilitate internal travel during the competition.
The preparation strategy extends beyond infrastructure, incorporating cultural programming to enrich the tournament experience. Planned activities include street animations, concerts, exhibitions, and artistic events, showcasing Morocco’s cultural heritage and providing visitors with diverse experiences beyond football.
The AFCON 2025 represents a pivotal opportunity for Morocco to elevate its international profile and stimulate local economies. Furthermore, it serves as a preparatory event for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. Authorities are committed to ensuring that every detail is meticulously planned, aiming to host a remarkable continental tournament that reflects the trust placed in Morocco by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
