Morocco receives new Avante 1800 patrol vessel from Spain

The Royal Moroccan Navy has marked a significant milestone in its maritime defense capabilities with the delivery of the Avante 1800 offshore patrol vessel, constructed by the Spanish shipbuilding company Navantia at its San Fernando shipyard in Andalusia. This vessel, registered as number 502, represents the first military naval ship built by Spain for Morocco in nearly four decades, underscoring a renewed strategic partnership between the two nations.

Measuring 87 meters in length with a beam of 13 meters, the Avante 1800 is designed to accommodate a crew of up to 60 personnel. Its stealthy hull minimizes radar detection, enhancing operational security in contested waters. Powered by a combined diesel-diesel propulsion system, the vessel balances endurance and efficiency, capable of patrolling both coastal zones and open seas at speeds reaching up to 26 knots.

Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the patrol vessel features a 3D surveillance radar, electro-optical sensors, electronic warfare systems, and an integrated combat management system. Its armament includes a medium-caliber naval gun, missile launchers for air and surface threats, and close-in defense systems. A flight deck at the stern supports the operation of medium-sized helicopters, extending the vessel’s reconnaissance and rapid response capabilities.

This acquisition aligns with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to modernize and strengthen Morocco’s naval forces, enhancing sovereignty and maritime security across the kingdom’s exclusive economic zones. The Avante 1800 is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing regional challenges such as irregular migration, smuggling, piracy, and the protection of strategic commercial routes in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

The contract with Navantia, valued at approximately 130 million euros, also includes comprehensive technical support encompassing spare parts, tools, documentation, and specialized training for Moroccan naval crews. Construction began in July 2023, with the keel laid in September 2024, and delivery scheduled for mid-2026, following a precise timeline agreed upon by Moroccan authorities and the Spanish shipbuilder.

This vessel complements Morocco’s already modernized fleet, which includes the FREMM frigate His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Sigma-class corvettes, further reinforcing the Royal Moroccan Navy’s capacity to secure its maritime interests effectively.

The Avante 1800’s launch symbolizes a renewed era of defense collaboration between Morocco and Spain, highlighting shared commitments to security and technological excellence in the region.
