Morocco’s ONCF launches summer plan to serve millions of travelers with expanded rail services
The National Railway Office (ONCF) has rolled out its “Summer 2025” plan to handle the surge in passenger traffic during the peak travel season. Running from June 23 to September 14, the initiative aims to enhance travel experiences for domestic passengers, Moroccan expatriates, and tourists by expanding train services and offering special discounts.
Enhanced summer train services
Under the plan, ONCF is operating up to 237 trains daily to meet growing mobility demands. The Al Boraq high-speed network will maintain hourly service between Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat, and Casablanca from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with additional capacity during busy periods. The Al Atlas network adds 70 intercity trains per day, including night trains on long-distance routes like Tangier-Oujda, equipped with hotel-style compartments for overnight comfort.
Regional connections have also been reinforced. Mohammed V Airport will be served by 38 daily trains from Casablanca, running hourly from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Enhanced services are also available on the Casablanca-Rabat-Kenitra, Casablanca-Settat, and Casablanca-El Jadida routes, with the latter reaching 24 trains per day.
Discounts and offers for summer travelers
ONCF is introducing several promotional offers to make train travel more accessible. The Yalla Morocco card, available until August 31 for MAD 50 ($5), provides a 30% discount on 10 journeys across all train categories. Returning expatriates can benefit from the Ahlan rate, offering a 15% discount on one-way tickets from Mohammed V Airport, Tangier, or Marrakech stations.
Commuters can take advantage of a special Navette subscription offer, receiving three free round-trip tickets when purchasing a three-month subscription. Additionally, train passengers can enjoy discounts of up to 40% at partner destinations, including the Rabat Zoo and the National Museum Foundation.
ONCF has also modernized its services with the "ONCF VOYAGES" mobile app, which allows users to purchase tickets, select seats, and access personalized features. A 5% discount applies to purchases made through the app.
Supporting a record-breaking year
The “Summer 2025” plan aligns with ONCF’s projections for a record year, expecting to carry 57 million passengers and generate over MAD 5 billion ($500 million) in revenue, a 6% increase from 2024. Last year saw significant growth, with over 55 million passengers transported, up 4% from 2023. Al Boraq high-speed trains alone carried 5.5 million passengers in 2024, reflecting a 5% year-on-year increase.
Freight operations also performed strongly in 2024, with 20 million tons of goods transported, marking a 17% rise despite global economic challenges.
Preparing for future growth
In April, His Majesty King Mohammed VI inaugurated construction on the Kenitra-Marrakech High-Speed Rail Line, a 430-kilometer project that will cut travel times between Tangier and Marrakech to just 2 hours and 40 minutes. This groundbreaking project is part of broader efforts to modernize Morocco’s rail infrastructure.
To meet future demand, ONCF has signed contracts worth MAD 29 billion ($2.9 billion) for 168 next-generation trains. These include 18 high-speed trains from Alstom, 40 intercity trains from CAF, and 110 rapid transit trains from Hyundai Rotem.
These investments will support Morocco’s rail traffic growth and prepare the country for major events like the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The development of regional rapid transit networks is also a priority, ensuring seamless connectivity across key urban areas.
ONCF’s comprehensive approach reflects its commitment to improving travel options, boosting economic activity, and modernizing Morocco’s transportation infrastructure to meet future challenges.
