Morocco's Rising Divorce Rates Prompt Family Code Reform Initiative
Morocco faces growing concerns over divorce rates, with over 24,000 mutual divorces recorded against 249,089 marriages in 2023, according to Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi. The government is implementing measures to address this trend through family code reforms.
The initiative includes enhanced marriage preparation programs, improved court-based family mediation, and strengthened social support services. Despite these efforts, reconciliation rates have declined significantly, dropping from 20,000 couples in 2016 to 15,000 by 2021.
Aziza Hendar, head of specialized Public Prosecution Division, emphasizes mediation's role in preventing family dissolution and avoiding costly court proceedings. "Mediation protects families from breaking apart," she stated during an International Women's Day conference.
King Mohammed VI is leading comprehensive reforms to the Family Code, with proposals focusing on:
- Ensuring family stability
- Strengthening women's rights
- Protecting men's dignity
- Safeguarding children's interests
Justice Minister Ouahbi confirms the reforms aim to balance modern social changes with Morocco's religious and international commitments. The proposals, presented at the Royal Palace in Casablanca, reflect Morocco's effort to adapt traditional values to contemporary challenges.
