Morocco Secures Key Role in Global Insurance Leadership

Morocco Achieves Major Milestone with Vice-Presidency of GFIA

Morocco has achieved a landmark in the global insurance sector, with Bachir Baddou’s election as Vice President of the Global Federation of Insurance Associations (GFIA). The election, held during the GFIA General Assembly in Cape Town on December 4, 2024, underscores Morocco’s growing influence in the international insurance industry and highlights its pivotal role in advancing the interests of African and Arab insurance sectors.

Baddou, who has been a member of the GFIA Executive Committee since 2016, is the first Arab and African to assume this esteemed position. His appointment is a testament to Morocco’s contributions and leadership within the global insurance ecosystem.

A Global Platform for Collaboration

The GFIA, comprising 42 member associations and one observer association across 68 countries, represents 89% of the world’s insurance premiums. This organization addresses critical challenges facing the industry and engages with international regulatory bodies, making it a crucial platform for dialogue and innovation.

During the assembly, Stephen Frank of Canada was elected GFIA President, while other prominent leaders, including Thea Utoft Høj Jensen from Insurance Europe as Secretary-General and Toyonari Sasaki of Japan as Treasurer, were also appointed.

Advancing Morocco's Insurance Sector

Morocco’s active involvement in the GFIA aligns with the broader objectives of the Moroccan Federation of Insurance (FMA). Under the leadership of President Mohamed Hassan Bensalah, the FMA has worked to enhance international cooperation and introduce innovative strategies within the insurance sector.

Baddou’s new role is expected to amplify Morocco’s voice in addressing regulatory frameworks, market accessibility, and global risk management strategies. This appointment further elevates the perspectives of emerging markets and African economies in global insurance dialogues.

A Boost for Regional Representation

This milestone reflects the increasing prominence of Moroccan and African representatives in global financial organizations. It also demonstrates Morocco’s dedication to fostering international partnerships and driving progress within the insurance sector.

Baddou’s leadership in the GFIA will likely pave the way for enhanced collaboration, innovation, and sustainable growth, reinforcing Morocco’s reputation as a dynamic player in the global insurance landscape.
