Netanyahu accused of breaking Gaza truce with unjustified strikes on Rafah
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reignited tensions in Gaza by confirming a new round of airstrikes on Rafah, undermining the fragile ceasefire and sparking widespread condemnation. His statement described the attacks as a “measured response” following consultations with senior defense officials, claiming retaliation for alleged Hamas fire.
However, local and medical sources in Gaza dispute Israel’s account, insisting that no such attacks took place. Instead, they report yet another deadly escalation, killing civilians under the pretext of self-defense.
The strikes represent a significant breach of the ceasefire that was meant to halt months of bloodshed. Netanyahu’s decision reflects his government’s defiance of mounting international calls for restraint and growing domestic unrest. Analysts suggest the move is aimed at bolstering his political standing among far-right allies while reaffirming Israel’s hardline posture in Gaza.
According to Palestinian officials, Israel has violated the ceasefire at least 47 times since it began, killing 35 people and injuring over 140 in just two weeks. The latest assault on Rafah and central Gaza left seven civilians dead, including two children.
The Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, denied any involvement in clashes in Rafah, stating they had “no knowledge of any incidents or confrontations in that area.”
Since October 2023, Israeli operations in Gaza have killed at least 68,159 Palestinians and wounded more than 170,000, the majority women and children. Entire neighborhoods have been leveled, hospitals are running out of essential supplies, and Gaza’s border crossings remain sealed. The enclave’s population continues to face catastrophic humanitarian conditions amid relentless bombardments.
Life for Gaza’s residents has become a daily struggle for survival, with entire districts turned to rubble and little hope of relief as the ceasefire crumbles once again.
