New Essaouira–Seville flight strengthens Morocco’s tourism connectivity
A new air route linking Essaouira and Seville was inaugurated on Saturday with the arrival of a Vueling Airlines flight at Essaouira–Mogador International Airport. The connection marks another milestone for the UNESCO-listed coastal city, known as the “City of Trade Winds,” expanding its growing network of international destinations.
Operating once a week, every Saturday, the new route enhances Essaouira’s accessibility and underlines its rising profile among European travelers. The inaugural ceremony gathered local officials, tourism operators, and representatives from Vueling, who highlighted the route’s role in promoting cross-Mediterranean tourism.
A gateway between Essaouira and Andalusia
Redouane Khane, president of the Provincial Tourism Council, described the launch as “a major opportunity for the Andalusian market, historically close to our region.” He emphasized that the route would help diversify the city’s tourism clientele and strengthen its appeal heading into 2026.
Khane also commended the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) for its contribution to the project, praising its “tireless efforts” in positioning Essaouira as an attractive and well-connected destination.
Several passengers expressed enthusiasm about the new link, citing shorter travel times, greater comfort, and closer proximity between Morocco and southern Spain.
Strong air traffic growth supports expansion
Essaouira–Mogador International Airport has seen remarkable growth in recent months. Passenger traffic increased by 48.62% in September, reaching 29,410 travelers compared to 19,789 in the same month of 2024. Aircraft movements also rose sharply by 53.52%, from 142 to 218 flights.
With the addition of Seville, the airport now serves around ten international routes, including Paris, London, Brussels, Marseille, Bordeaux, Lyon, Düsseldorf, Madrid, and Seville, alongside a domestic route to Rabat.
A strategic step for Essaouira’s global visibility
The new connection forms part of Morocco’s broader tourism strategy to expand air access and promote cultural destinations beyond major hubs like Marrakech and Casablanca. For Essaouira, a city renowned for its Atlantic charm, artistic heritage, and music festivals, this direct link represents both economic potential and symbolic progress in cross-border connectivity.
