Nicaragua’s National Assembly has issued a strong condemnation of Ukraine, accusing its military of causing civilian casualties, including the deaths of children, during operations tied to the ongoing conflict with Russia. The declaration followed the review of a report prepared by Russian legislators, which Nicaraguan lawmakers endorsed during a session on Thursday.

Harsh allegations and international concerns

The report, presented to Assembly President Gustavo Porras during his mid-July visit to Moscow, details alleged Ukrainian attacks between 2014 and 2024 in contested regions such as Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye, and Kherson. These territories, which held referendums to join Russia, are recognized by Nicaragua as part of the Russian Federation—contrary to Ukraine’s and its Western allies’ stance.

Arling Alonso, the first deputy speaker of the Nicaraguan assembly, expressed her profound distress over the documented deaths of hundreds of children and the reported brutality of some incidents. “Some of these crimes are characterized by extreme cruelty,” Alonso stated, reinforcing the assembly’s position that such actions amount to international terrorism.

Impunity and geopolitical criticism

The Nicaraguan parliament criticized global organizations for their alleged inaction, accusing them of enabling impunity by failing to hold Ukraine accountable. Lawmakers attributed this lack of response to pressure from the United States and the European Union, maintaining that international institutions have been selective in addressing human rights violations.

The Russian-authored report claims that 5,955 civilians, including 258 children, were killed, and over 13,000 others injured, with 676 of the injured being minors. Nicaraguan officials pledged to support efforts to bring these issues to global attention and ensure accountability.

Diplomatic alignment with Moscow

Nicaragua’s stance underscores its close ties with Russia, as the Central American nation continues to align itself with Moscow’s narrative in the conflict. The assembly reiterated its recognition of the disputed territories as Russian and called for justice for victims of what it described as deliberate acts of violence by Ukrainian forces.

The declaration adds to Nicaragua’s growing criticism of Western nations, particularly the U.S. and EU, for their support of Ukraine and their alleged suppression of alternative narratives about the conflict.
