Paris region hit by bronchiolitis epidemic, Says public health agency
The Paris region has been affected by the annual bronchiolitis epidemic, according to Santé publique France. The disease primarily affects infants and, while usually mild, can lead to complications requiring hospitalization.
During the week ending October 26, “syndromic indicators related to bronchiolitis increased both in the community and in hospitals, reaching levels close to last year at the same time,” Santé publique France reported. Île-de-France has now entered the epidemic phase. Other regions, such as Normandy, remain in a pre-epidemic phase for now.
Bronchiolitis is often caused by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which can also threaten elderly people. Annual RSV immunization campaigns are now underway, either by vaccinating pregnant women with Abrysvo (Pfizer) or immunizing infants with Beyfortus (Sanofi/AstraZeneca). Other viruses, including rhinoviruses, can also trigger bronchiolitis.
Santé publique France has also reminded the public of Covid-19 and flu vaccination campaigns targeting high-risk groups, mainly those over 65, pregnant women, and chronically ill patients. Public communication campaigns promote mask-wearing, frequent handwashing, and hygiene measures to prevent the spread of these respiratory illnesses.
