Romania: ‘Possible Drone Fragments’ found after Russian attack on Ukraine
Bucharest (AFP) — Romania’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday that “possible fragments of a drone” were discovered on its territory following overnight Russian strikes targeting Ukraine’s Danube port of Izmail.
Authorities reported that, during the night between Monday and Tuesday, they were alerted to “the impact of an aerial object approximately five kilometers south of the border” in the northern area of Tulcea region.
Military teams were immediately dispatched to the site, where they confirmed the presence of debris believed to be from a drone. “The area has been secured and investigations are ongoing,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that an alert message was issued to residents in nearby villages.
Local emergency services said they received a call about a possible object falling from the sky. Firefighters who arrived at the scene confirmed that the impact had not caused a fire.
President Nicusor Dan described the incident as “accidental,” noting that “similar events have occurred before.”
The episode comes amid repeated complaints from European Union member states about Russian aircraft violating European airspace. In October, Brussels condemned what it called “Moscow’s escalation,” after incidents involving Romania, Poland, Estonia, Denmark, and Germany.
Meanwhile, NATO has been conducting large-scale exercises in Romania since late October to test its rapid response capabilities in the event of a crisis.
The United States recently announced a partial reduction of its military presence in Eastern Europe, including the withdrawal of about 700 of the 1,700 American troops stationed in Romania.
In response to previous drone incursions, Bucharest passed a law earlier this year authorizing its military to shoot down unmanned aircraft violating its airspace.
