Sánchez urges global stand against Israel's actions in Gaza

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, speaking from Turkey at the opening of the Socialist International Council in Istanbul, condemned the situation in Gaza as unacceptable. He emphasized that remaining silent is not an option for the international community and called for Israel to immediately halt its military operation aimed at occupying Gaza. Sánchez asserted that Gaza belongs to the Palestinians, who have been forcibly displaced, a violation of international humanitarian law.

Sánchez announced Spain’s plan to work with Palestine to propose a UN General Assembly resolution demanding Israel allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. He stressed that defending humanitarian justice is not an attack on any party.

The Prime Minister also condemned Hamas for holding Israeli hostages since their attack on October 7, 2023, which targeted civilians including infants, elderly, and women. However, he urged Israel to understand that peace cannot be achieved through force or human suffering, highlighting that a two-state solution remains the only path to lasting and just peace.

He expressed sorrow for Palestinian families suffering the loss of their children and called for continued vocal opposition to these human rights violations. Sánchez also addressed the conflict in Ukraine, affirming Spain’s support for a just and lasting peace and criticizing the Trump administration for exacerbating the crisis. He noted ongoing multilateral mediation efforts and emphasized the need for development goals to be at the forefront of these solutions.
