A shooting outside a mosque in Örebro, central Sweden, has left one man dead and another injured, adding to concerns over public safety and rising tensions near places of worship. Authorities believe the attack, which occurred shortly after Friday prayers, is linked to gang violence, according to Swedish police and local reports.

The incident unfolded in the mosque’s parking lot, where a 25-year-old man was fatally shot as he exited the building. A second man in his 20s sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Emergency services responded swiftly, while police urged the public to avoid the area. Roberto Eid Forest, head of the Örebro local police department, confirmed that at least one suspect fled the scene and the case is being investigated as murder, attempted murder, and aggravated weapons offenses.

Local media reports suggest the attack may be connected to ongoing tensions between rival gangs in the region. Police are examining the possibility of gang involvement, with recent clashes in Örebro cited as a potential backdrop to the shooting.

While authorities suspect gang activity, the location of the attack—near a mosque—has sparked broader concerns about Islamophobia and the safety of Muslim communities in Sweden and across Europe. In recent years, Muslims have reported an increase in hate crimes, including verbal harassment, physical assaults, and threats.

In Sweden, far-right activists have staged Quran-burning protests, drawing condemnation from Muslim residents and the international community. Many Swedish Muslims say such acts deepen divisions and contribute to a climate of fear, especially around places of worship.

The incident underscores the intertwining of social, political, and security challenges in Europe, as communities grapple with the impact of extremism, gang violence, and rising anti-Muslim sentiment.
