Spain-Morocco Tech Collaboration Gains Momentum
In a significant stride towards advancing technological integration, Spain is fortifying its collaboration with Morocco, introducing cutting-edge innovations into key sectors of the North African nation's economy. Javier Ponce, the Managing Director of the Spanish Center for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI), emphasized this commitment during a recent seminar in Rabat centered on "Entrepreneurial Innovation Supporting Investment."
Ponce declared, "The CDTI is poised to incorporate new information technologies into Moroccan infrastructure, automotive manufacturing, and agriculture." Notably, the CDTI has invested 5 million euros in Morocco through 20 diverse projects over the past three years.
The seminar, attended by representatives from approximately 30 public and private entities in both countries, focused on pivotal industries such as logistics and automotive manufacturing. Morocco currently leads automotive production in Africa, while Spain holds the position of the second-largest producer in the EU. Both nations boast extensive port and airport networks, necessitating advanced logistics capabilities.
Highlighting agriculture as another key area for expanded cooperation, Ponce stressed the importance of promoting technological management to address challenges posed by climate change. "Spain ranks third globally for agritech companies," he noted, underscoring the need for adapting production methods to comply with the 2030 EU ban on chemical fertilizers. Ponce added that this transition will require the introduction of more advanced IT capabilities.
Providing additional insights, José Manuel Durán, CDTI's North Africa and Middle East Delegate, reported that the Spanish agency has financed 20 Moroccan projects over the past three years, mobilizing a total budgetary support of 5.3 million euros. This financial commitment underscores Spain's dedication to fostering technological advancements and economic growth in Morocco through mutually beneficial collaborations.
