Spanish police investigate Mango founder’s son in tragic death probe
Spanish authorities have confirmed that the investigation into the death of Isak Andic, founder of the renowned fashion brand Mango, remains open. New developments have placed his eldest son, Jonathan Andic, under scrutiny as a suspect.
Isak Andic, 71, passed away in December 2024 after falling over 100 meters while hiking with Jonathan in the Montserrat mountains near Barcelona. Initially deemed an accident, the case has taken a turn following reports of inconsistencies in Jonathan’s statements.
Investigative focus on Jonathan Andic
Catalan regional police and judicial sources have highlighted gaps between Jonathan’s testimony and forensic evidence. According to El País, Jonathan’s statements during two interrogations have raised suspicion, and his status shifted from witness to suspect in late September. Investigators are also analyzing data from his mobile phone.
Further complicating matters, testimony from Isak Andic’s partner, professional golfer Estefania Knuth, pointed to tension between father and son. The family trail where the incident occurred, connecting the Salnitre caves in Collbató to the Montserrat monastery, is a well-traveled route popular with hikers.
Catalan authorities, while confirming an ongoing investigation, remain tight-lipped about its details due to judicial secrecy. The High Court of Justice of Catalonia clarified that no formal charges have been filed against any individual at this stage.
Legacy of Isak Andic and Mango
Istanbul-born Isak Andic was one of Spain’s wealthiest figures, with a family fortune estimated by Forbes at $4.5 billion. In 1984, Andic opened Mango’s first store on Barcelona's iconic Paseo de Gracia, transforming the brand into a global fashion empire.
Mango, known for blending professional and casual styles, operates in over 120 markets with 16,400 employees. Its innovative model, similar to that of domestic rival Inditex (owner of Zara), adapts production to evolving trends while maintaining affordability.
The Andic family has stated they are fully cooperating with authorities and expressed confidence in Jonathan’s innocence. Mango has not commented on the matter.
A family at the center of scrutiny
Jonathan Andic, 44, began his career at Mango in 2005 and now serves as vice-chairman of the board. Known for his leadership of Mango Man, he has publicly emphasized perseverance and ambition in his professional journey.
Despite the tragedy and ongoing investigation, the Andic family remains hopeful for clarity and resolution.
