Syria's Aviation Milestone: International Flights Set to Resume After Political Shift
Syria is preparing to reconnect with the world through its skies as international flights are scheduled to resume on January 7, marking a significant shift in the country's post-conflict recovery. The General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, led by Ashhad al-Salibi, announced plans to reactivate both Damascus and Aleppo airports for global air traffic.
Qatar Airlines has emerged as the first major carrier to establish new routes, announcing three weekly flights between Doha's Hamad International Airport and Damascus International Airport. This development represents the first such connection in nearly 13 years, following the prolonged disruption caused by Syria's civil war.
The resumption of flights follows recent political changes in Syria, including the December 8 transition of power. The interim government's decision to restore international air travel signals efforts to rebuild the nation's infrastructure and international connections.
The aviation sector's revival is part of a broader pattern of reconstruction efforts in Syria, though challenges remain. Critics maintain a cautious stance, particularly in light of recent controversial educational policy changes that have drawn criticism for their conservative approach.
Regional stakeholders, including Morocco, have expressed support for Syria's stabilization efforts. The restoration of air travel represents a crucial step toward reintegrating Syria into the international community, though observers continue to monitor the interim government's approach to addressing domestic concerns and implementing reforms.
The reopening of Syria's airspace to international traffic stands as a tangible indicator of the country's gradual emergence from isolation, with potential implications for regional trade, diplomacy, and civilian mobility.
