Tijaniyya Brotherhood: Strengthening Morocco-Senegal Ties

In a recent speech in Dakar, Ahmed Toufiq, the Moroccan Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs, emphasized the pivotal role of the Tijaniyya Brotherhood in enriching religious and spiritual ties between Morocco and African nations, particularly Senegal. Speaking during the opening of the 44th edition of the "Islamic Cultural Days," organized by the Tijani Coordination in Dakar, Toufiq highlighted the significance of Senegal's strengthened relations with Morocco, facilitated by the Tijaniyya, which has served as a bridge for the spread of Sufi teachings in West Africa, especially in Senegal.

The Tijaniyya Brotherhood, through its deep roots in the region, has played a historical role in fostering communication between Morocco and the broader African continent. Toufiq stressed the importance of the cultural event, which brings together prominent scholars of the Tijaniyya and their disciples to discuss various projects and initiatives of the Zaouias in Senegal, a brotherly country to Morocco.

During his address, the Minister also conveyed the greetings of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to the Tijaniyya community, underlining the Sovereign's continuous support for the Tijaniyya and His commitment to preserving the strong fraternal bonds between Morocco and Senegal.

Toufiq further noted the legacy of Cheikh Sidi Ahmed Tidjani, the founder of the Tijaniyya, whose mausoleum in Fes remains a significant pilgrimage site for followers of the Brotherhood worldwide. He emphasized that the teachings of the Tijaniyya continue to adhere to the principles of Sharia and the Sunna of the Prophet, while also playing a crucial role in Senegal’s resistance against colonial occupation and in countering extremist movements today.

In a message read on his behalf, the General Khalifa of the Tijaniyya, Sereigne Babacar Sy Mohamed Mansour, highlighted the vital role played by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Amir Al-Mouminine, in preserving religious constants and strengthening the spiritual ties between Morocco and Senegal. He also underscored the commitment of both nations to fostering South-South cooperation based on solidarity and shared values.

The opening ceremony of the Islamic Cultural Days, held at the Esplanade of the Great Mosque of Dakar, was attended by several dignitaries, including Senegal's Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Jean Baptiste Tine, and the Moroccan Ambassador to Senegal, Hassan Naciri.

Since its establishment in 1981 by the late Serigne Abdoul Aziz Sy Dabakh, the Islamic Cultural Days have become a major event for the Tijaniyya in Senegal. Initially placed under the patronage of the late King Hassan II, and later under the patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the event has served as a platform for promoting peace, tolerance, and coexistence among the followers of the Tijaniyya and the wider community.

The Islamic Cultural Days are more than just a celebration of the Tijaniyya; they are a testament to the deep-rooted spiritual and cultural ties between Morocco and Senegal, fostering a sense of unity and mutual respect that transcends borders and religious differences.
