U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday to establish a blacklist of countries where Americans are allegedly held unjustly. The measure, inspired by the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, carries severe sanctions for responsible officials.

No countries have been officially named yet, but a senior U.S. official indicated that China, Iran, and Afghanistan would be closely examined due to repeated involvement in what Washington calls “hostage diplomacy.”

The decree authorizes sanctions against the targeted nations, including travel bans for involved officials and, potentially, for U.S. citizens. The move echoes the existing strict travel restriction to North Korea following the Otto Warmbier case, the U.S. student who died after being detained in Pyongyang.

A U.S. official stated anonymously: “We are drawing a very clear line: you cannot use Americans as bargaining chips, or you will face severe consequences.”
