Trump extends deadline for TikTok sale by 90 days
US President Donald Trump has announced a new 90-day extension for TikTok to secure a buyer outside of China, marking the third postponement of a planned ban on the app. This decision delays the federal mandate, initially set to take effect before Trump's inauguration in January, which required TikTok to be sold or banned due to national security concerns.
The White House stated that the extension aims to allow time for finalizing a deal that ensures TikTok users in the US can continue using the app with confidence in the protection of their data. Trump, who has shown personal affinity for TikTok, previously expressed willingness to grant extensions if needed.
Despite ongoing national security fears and tensions between the US and China, Trump has downplayed the immediate risk of banning the app, signaling a softer stance after realizing TikTok’s popularity among young voters helped his campaign. TikTok has emerged as a symbol of the broader US-China technology rivalry.
Negotiations remain complicated, partly due to disagreements over trade tariffs. Discussions reportedly involve restructuring ownership so that US investors increase their stake in a new independent global TikTok entity, while reducing the influence of the Chinese parent company. However, uncertainty persists about the fate of TikTok’s key algorithm, critical to its success.
Meanwhile, TikTok continues to innovate, recently launching a new set of AI-driven tools designed to help advertisers create video content from text or images.
