Trump proposes rebuilding Alcatraz to house violent criminals
President Donald Trump has announced plans to rebuild and reopen the long-closed Alcatraz prison to detain what he describes as the country’s most dangerous and violent criminals. In a public statement, Trump instructed several federal agencies, including the Bureau of Prisons and the Department of Justice, to collaborate on restoring the island facility, expanding its capacity and purpose.
Alcatraz, located about two kilometers off San Francisco’s coast, originally operated from 1934 until its closure in 1963 due to its high operational costs. Known for housing notorious criminals such as Al Capone, the prison became famous for dramatic escape attempts and its isolated, fortress-like setting. Since 1973, the site has served as a national park and attracts over a million visitors each year.
Trump emphasized a return to a tougher approach on crime, especially those linked to migrants, as a pillar of his proposed second term. He cited the need to isolate repeat offenders from the public, condemning what he called a failure to control violence in American cities.
Critics have dismissed the proposal as symbolic rather than practical. High costs, logistical challenges, and the current function of Alcatraz as a tourist destination raise serious questions about the feasibility of its conversion back to a prison. Detractors argue the move reflects political messaging rather than a realistic policy shift.
Trump has also cited historical legislation like the 1798 Enemies Act to justify harsher immigration enforcement and has supported deporting criminals even U.S. citizens in some cases to countries like El Salvador. Human rights experts have recently raised alarms over the U.S. government’s handling of deportations, alleging violations of legal due process for hundreds of migrants.
