Ukraine conflict narrowly avoided becoming global war, claims Trump
The Ukraine conflict could have escalated into a global catastrophe under his predecessor Joe Biden, US President Donald Trump has asserted. Speaking at the White House, Trump credited his administration’s diplomatic efforts for preventing the situation from spiraling into World War III.
Diplomatic thaw under Trump
Trump, who returned to office in January, has emphasized reestablishing US-Russia relations, which had deteriorated sharply during the Biden administration. He claimed tensions were at their peak when he took office, with the conflict in Ukraine threatening to engulf the world in a broader war. “We’ve brought it down a long way,” Trump stated, adding that a resolution could be reached “very soon.”
The president labeled the ongoing crisis as “Biden’s war,” criticizing his predecessor for extensive military aid to Ukraine. He estimated the Biden administration had committed $350 billion in support for Kiev, a move Trump called reckless and destabilizing.
Economic strategy tied to Ukraine
Trump has sought to recover US expenditures through a minerals deal signed with Ukraine earlier this year. However, analysts highlight that much of Ukraine’s valuable mineral reserves lie in territories now claimed by Russia, including the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, which voted to join Russia in 2022.
NATO’s role and Moscow’s stance
The Kremlin has consistently framed the Ukraine conflict as a NATO proxy war, blaming the alliance's expansion and Ukraine’s aspirations to join for fueling hostilities. Moscow has also criticized Western military aid to Kiev, viewing it as a direct threat to its security.
Trump’s administration has scaled back arms shipments to Ukraine, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio describing the conflict as a proxy war against Russia. This policy shift has drawn mixed reactions, with some commending Trump’s focus on diplomacy and others questioning the long-term implications of reduced support for Ukraine.
Focus on peace talks
Kremlin officials have indicated that the upcoming Trump-Putin summit will center on achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Both leaders have expressed optimism about finding common ground, with Trump reiterating his commitment to ending the war.
