US lawmakers urge stronger dialogue with China to reduce military tensions
A delegation from the United States Congress visiting Beijing has called on China and the US to deepen military dialogue in order to avoid misunderstandings that could escalate into conflict.
Speaking at a press conference at the US Embassy in Beijing on Tuesday, Representative Adam Smith, the leading Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, stressed that communication between the two militaries is crucial given the growing number of close encounters in the Asia-Pacific region.
“We have seen our ships and planes come dangerously close to theirs,” Smith said. “We must improve communication to prevent accidents and miscalculations.”
This marks the first congressional visit to China since 2019. The bipartisan delegation of four lawmakers met with Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun, discussing ways to reduce tensions linked to trade disputes, Taiwan, and territorial claims in the South China Sea.
Smith also highlighted the rapid pace of technological change, from artificial intelligence to drone warfare and cyber capabilities, warning that misinterpretations of military advancements could increase risks. “Both sides must talk openly to prevent any slide into conflict,” he noted.
For his part, Minister Dong urged US lawmakers to use their influence to “eliminate sources of disruption” and foster conditions for better relations between the two armed forces.
