Chinese President Xi Jinping took center stage at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea, following a fragile trade truce reached with U.S. President Donald Trump. The agreement, struck before Trump’s departure, suspended further restrictions on China’s exports of rare earths, a move that could have disrupted global supply chains.

Xi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with the Canadian, Japanese, and Thai leaders on the sidelines of the summit. The talks are aimed at strengthening economic cooperation, rebuilding diplomatic channels, and reducing trade barriersacross the Pacific Rim.

Speaking during a closed-door session, Xi emphasized that “changes unseen in a century are accelerating across the world,” urging nations to work together in turbulent times. “The rougher the seas, the more we must pull together,” he added, highlighting China’s commitment to multilateral trade and shared growth.

Representing the United States in Trump’s absence, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reiterated Washington’s goal of “rebalancing trade relationships” to support global growth.

Meanwhile, all eyes are on Xi’s expected meeting with Japan’s new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, the first woman to hold the post. Her nationalist views and hawkish defense policies could challenge the recent diplomatic thaw between Beijing and Tokyo. Discussions are expected to address regional security, Japanese citizens detained in China, and trade restrictions on Japanese agricultural products.
