Attack in Hamburg leaves 18 injured, raises security concerns

The knife attack at Hamburg's central station has left a total of 18 individuals injured, an increase from the previously reported 17, according to a statement released by German police on Saturday, May 24.

The suspect, a 39-year-old German woman, remains in custody and is expected to be presented before a judge later today, the authorities confirmed. She was apprehended shortly after the incident on Friday evening without resistance. While the motives behind her actions are still unclear, a police spokesperson stated that a political motive is not being prioritized in the investigation.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his deep dismay regarding this act of violence. According to the German daily Bild, the attack occurred on a platform at Hamburg's station, which is the second most populous city in Germany.

In recent months, Germany has witnessed a series of deadly knife assaults that have shocked the nation. These incidents, attributed to jihadist motives and far-right violence, have brought security issues into sharp focus. On the same day of the Hamburg attack, four additional people were injured in a knife assault in the west of the country.

The suspect in this latter incident is a 35-year-old Syrian man who was arrested by authorities, who suspect the attack may be Islamist in nature. He targeted a group of individuals outside a bar in downtown Bielefeld (North Rhine-Westphalia) before fleeing the scene.
