Balearia launches high-speed ferry on Tarifa-Tangier route

Spanish ferry company Balearia has unveiled a significant expansion of its services between Tarifa, Spain, and Tangier, Morocco, by introducing a new high-speed ferry, the Jaume I, which commenced operations today. This ferry, with a capacity for over 600 passengers and 150 vehicles, departed from the port of Tarifa at 11:00 AM, marking a new chapter in cross-border transport.

With the addition of the Jaume I, Balearia will increase its daily trips on this vital route from four to six. The company has plans to further enhance service frequency in the coming weeks, aiming to offer between eight and 12 daily trips based on demand.

“It’s a very important route for our customers, for Moroccans, and for all tourists visiting Morocco, particularly the city of Tangier,” stated Bassoul, a spokesperson for Balearia. “We aim to offer a comfortable and punctual service to all those who place their trust in Balearia.”

Balearia has maintained operations between Spain and Morocco for over two decades, and this new Tarifa-Tangier service represents its fourth connection between the two nations. The company also provides services from Tangier Med to Algeciras and Motril, as well as from Nador to Almeria.

During a joint press conference with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Madrid, Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares highlighted the strategic importance of the European Union’s partnership with Morocco, reinforcing the significance of this ferry route in fostering tourism and economic ties.

In an exciting development, Balearia announced it has secured a 15-year contract (2025–2040) to operate this route. As part of this agreement, the company will introduce two new electric ships, each accommodating 800 passengers. These vessels will be built in Spain and will offer 100% electric travel, establishing this route as the first “Green Corridor” between Africa and Europe.
