Somali president survives assassination attempt in Mogadishu
On Tuesday, the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed details of an assassination attempt against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who survived a bombing targeting his convoy near the presidential palace in the heart of Mogadishu. The explosion occurred at around 10:32 AM in the “Hamra Jib” area as the president was on his way to join frontline soldiers in the Hirshabelle state for a Ramadan breakfast. The Ministry confirmed that the president emerged unharmed from the attack and continued his journey without delay. This attack, which tragically resulted in civilian casualties, highlights the weakening capabilities of terrorist groups in light of the ongoing losses inflicted by Somali military forces. Security agencies have launched a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances of the incident, with more details expected to be released in due course. Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that their members targeted the president’s convoy with explosives in Mogadishu on Tuesday.
