Ron DeSantis finds himself in the looming shadow of Donald Trump. In a bid to carve out his own identity, the Florida governor has adopted a strategy of imitation, aiming to make the Sunshine State a bastion of MAGA ideals. Since the Republican administration's arrival in January 2025, Tallahassee has witnessed a flurry of initiatives designed to solidify DeSantis's legacy and align closely with Trumpist rhetoric as the 2026 elections approach.

Among his bold proposals is the potential candidacy of his wife, Casey DeSantis, to succeed him while he seeks to engrave his mark on Florida's governance. He has established a state Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), modeled after Elon Musk's version, even though a similar task force has operated since 2007. The state legislature has also introduced legislation aimed at undocumented immigrants, echoing the narrative that has defined Trump's policies. Additionally, Republican legislators are advocating for the elimination of the state property tax, a significant revenue source in a state that lacks an income tax.
