Aryna Sabalenka claims victory at WTA 1000 Miami tournament
In a thrilling finale at the WTA 1000 Miami tournament, Aryna Sabalenka secured her first title of the 2025 season, overcoming the American Jessica Pegula. This victory comes after two consecutive defeats in finals at the Australian Open and Indian Wells, marking a significant comeback for the world number one.
From the outset, Sabalenka demonstrated unwavering determination. Despite a shaky start where she had to fend off two break points, she quickly regained her footing. Pegula responded strongly, breaking back and even taking a temporary lead.
The first set was characterized by a series of breaks, underscoring the fierce competition between the players. At 3-3, Sabalenka regained control, taking a 5-3 lead, only for Pegula to level the match at 5-5. However, Sabalenka surged ahead in the closing moments of the set, clinching it 7-5 after nearly 50 minutes of intense play.
In the second set, Pegula sought to shift the momentum with an early break, but she was unable to maintain her advantage. Sabalenka, relentless in her pursuit, rattled off four consecutive games, establishing a decisive lead. She sealed the match with her second match point, winning 7-5, 6-2 in just 1 hour and 29 minutes.
This triumph is particularly noteworthy for Sabalenka, as it marks her first title in Miami, a venue where she had previously never advanced beyond the quarter-finals. The victory solidifies her position at the top of the world rankings, boasting over 3,000 points ahead of Iga Swiatek, who was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Pegula, while remaining in fourth place, is closing in on her compatriot Coco Gauff.
