Wydad and Raja Casablanca: Anticipation builds for historic derby amid fan unrest
The Casablanca derby is set against a backdrop of fan unrest as Wydad Casablanca prepares to host city rivals Raja Casablanca on Saturday evening at the Stade Mohammed V. This match is one of the most anticipated events in Moroccan football, steeped in history and rivalry.
Kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m., and fans can watch the action live on Arriyadia HD.
Raja Casablanca arrives at the derby facing significant challenges. Midfielder Federico Bikoro has been excluded from the squad due to disciplinary issues stemming from a training ground incident, while defender Mohamed Boulaksout is suspended following a red card in the Cup of the Throne. Despite these setbacks, manager Lassaad Chabbi remains optimistic, stating that preparations have been “normal” and emphasizing his team's focus on achieving a favorable outcome.
On the other side, Wydad will also contend with absences, as centre-back Ayman El Dirani is suspended. However, the return of Abdelmounaim Boutouil is anticipated, allowing him to pair with Jamal Harkass in defense.
This match will take place under unusual circumstances, as Wydad’s ultras group, the Winners, have declared a boycott in protest against rising ticket prices and what they consider “unfair” organizational decisions, including the closure of a traditionally allocated section of the stadium. The absence of these passionate supporters is expected to impact the atmosphere in a fixture known for its intensity.
Both teams are eager to recover following disappointing exits from the Throne Cup. Wydad is currently in pursuit of second place in the league standings, while Raja seeks to stabilize the mood among their supporters. Given the key player absences and the mounting pressure, a draw, potentially even a goalless result, seems the most likely outcome.
