Tragic stadium collapse in Algiers claims one life, injures 11 fans
A devastating incident unfolded on Saturday at the July 5 Stadium in Algiers during a match between Mouloudia Club d’Alger and NC Magra. A barrier in the upper stands collapsed, causing several fans to fall. The tragedy left one supporter dead and 11 others injured.
Match halted amid chaos
The National Football League immediately canceled the trophy presentation ceremony following the accident. The mood at the stadium turned somber as emergency services attended to the injured and transported them to nearby hospitals.
Presidential condolences
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased. In a message shared on social media, he mourned the tragic loss and extended his sympathies to the injured.
“We extend our condolences to his family, fellow supporters, and the entire Mouloudia d’Alger team,” Tebboune wrote on X. He also wished the injured fans a swift recovery, praying for their safe return to their loved ones.
A call for safety
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over stadium safety in Algeria. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the barrier collapse and enact measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
